In the city of Mérida, the work is progressing through the use of the cell model. "Klesis", an evangelical social work organization founded about 10 years ago by local Extremaduran Christians, is proving to be a valuable platform for ministering God's love to needy people and communicating the Gospel in a practical way. Current projects in Mérida include a lending library of materials on family issues and drug and alcohol prevention, distribution of food to needy families, support groups for friends and family of people with substance abuse problems, a job bank, English classes, and special activities for youth.
Another fruitful ministry in Mérida have been periodic ladies' programs, called "Coffee and something else" Café y Algo Más in which friends and contacts are invited for a time of fellowship with a bit of light entertainment, as well as an interesting speaker who attempts to share the Gospel in a culturally relevant and interesting manner.
Up to the present, the greatest response to the ministry in Mérida has been among Latin American immigrants. It is hoped that as more and more of these people respond to Christ, and are discipled, that they will also catch a missionary vision for sharing their faith with the native Spaniards with whom they have contact in their work and neighborhoods.
