History: Christopher Columbus had the first American Indians baptized in the monastery in Guadalupe, Cáceres, which played a key role in the spread of Roman Catholicism across Texas, California, Mexico and Central and South America.

Bible: The first translators of the Bible into Spanish were monks Casiodoro de Reina and Cipriano de Valera from the villages in southern Extremadura. The Reina-Valera Bible first published in 1602 has become the world’s most popular Spanish Bible and the most printed work in the Spanish language. Oddly enough the Reina-Valera Bible is still unheard of in Extremadura!
